The University of Pittsburgh offers one of the only bachelor degree programs in Emergency Medicine (EM) in the country. This program is designed to provide our graduates with a competitive advantage in the health care fields. Many graduating EM students continue on to medical school or other graduate level programs. Students are provided with a strong foundation in clinical experiences, educational expertise and administrative leadership. The program faculty is leading educators in their fields and takes a dynamic and multidisciplinary approach to emergency medicine education.

At the completion of their junior year, students who have met the eligibility requirements may take the National Registry Paramedic examination to become national- and state-certified paramedics. The Emergency Medicine Program has an outstanding track record of success on the certification examinations. The Emergency Medicine Program combines didactic classroom knowledge, practical laboratory experiences with hospitals, and ambulance clinical experiences to prepare students as competent entry-level paramedics. This foundational education allows graduates to work as clinicians both in and out of the hospital. It also provides an excellent opportunity to continue in nursing, physician assistant, or medical school.

Prospective students who have not earned college credits since graduating from high school with a diploma or GED should consult this section for information on admission to the University of Pittsburgh. For the Pittsburgh campus, a 100 or higher TOEFL composite score with sub scores of 21 or higher is considered competitive, or a 7.0 IELTS with sub scores of 6.0 or higher.
