The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Creative Arts and Culture – BA(CAC) programme has two streams: Music and Visual Arts. Although the two streams have a considerable number of elements in common, each stream is treated as an independent choice for the purpose of admission.

Programme Aims

This programme aims to develop community-based artists who are able to work across a range of established art forms and contribute to the promotion and development of the arts and arts education in the local, regional, and international cultural and creative industries.

Programme Features

This is the first undergraduate programme in Hong Kong to offer arts management and cultural studies components to complement discipline-based training in the creative arts. It aims at producing graduates as community-based artists who are not only artists conversant in an arts discipline (i.e., music, visual arts), but with working knowledge of other art forms and cross-disciplinary understanding of one's cultural environment while experienced in aspects of arts management, communication, and promotional and educational practicalities.

Programme Objectives

Students are expected to:

• demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of the historical, social, economic and cultural contexts of arts in Hong Kong and its neighboring regions, including relevant theories, analyses and criticisms, and practice of arts production;
• apply acquired knowledge, skills and technologies to promote and develop the arts in local and global contexts;
• demonstrate the ability to organize and manage arts and cultural events;
• demonstrate the ability to make informed and reasoned responses in addressing issues related to the arts in society; and
• articulate via oral, visual and written communication means, well-developed analyses and criticisms of the arts, arts production, promotion and dissemination.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon completion of the programme, students should be able to:

• understand and interpret the arts and cultures from diverse theoretical and practical perspectives;
• make connections across the arts, related academic disciplines and cultural contexts in Hong Kong, Mainland China and other parts of the world;
• reflect on and make reasoned analysis of the needs and issues relevant to the cultural and creative industries; and
• work competently and professionally in supporting arts education and arts administration within cultural and creative industries.

Career Prospects/Professional Qualifications

Due to the rapid growth of the cultural and creative industries in Asia and increased regional competition, there is great demand for cultural expertise who are creative, multi-skilled, flexible, resourceful, ethical and competent to work in fields requiring multi-tasking beyond their major area of studies. Thus, qualified graduates with interdisciplinary training, knowledge in cross-arts issues and management as well as cultural literacy are in high demand. Graduates will be prepared for a range of possible employment in the cultural and creative industries, the commercial sector, the media and governmental organisations. Graduates may also choose to pursue a teaching career by completing an additional year of professional teacher training or to undertake further studies locally or overseas. The recent graduates have been working at various private and public organisations, such as 100 Most, Baron School of Music, Chung Ying Theatre Company, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Lumenvisum, The Mills Gallery, Ming Pao Daily News, Moon Gallery, Play note Limited, The Pottery Workshop at Jingdezhen, Theatre Ronin, The West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, etc.
