Programme Aims

This programme aims at providing students with solid coaching in Mathematics, including fundamental concepts, computational skills and modelling techniques, as well as concrete training in teaching all levels of secondary mathematics subjects to a wide spectrum of students.

On completion of the programme, students are expected to be able to:

• demonstrate understanding of fundamental concepts, principles, results, skills and techniques of reasoning in various branches of mathematics;
• use mathematical knowledge to solve problems in diverse situations;
• implement the learning theories and teaching skills to guide learners to learn mathematics;
• mediate mathematical knowledge for students’ learning in various learning and teaching environments; and
• execute new technology for learning and teaching mathematics in secondary schools.

Major

The curriculum covers a wide range of courses which focuses on the strengthening and broadening student’s understanding of the fundamental concepts, the development of mathematical thinking and the connection to string up theories in all major aspects of mathematics. Such a rigorous foundation in mathematics will enable teachers to teach from a holistic point of view, as well as prepare them for further involvement in mathematics education research and policy making. This major also emphasizes the techniques and expertise in designing and executing IT-assisted learning packages in teaching mathematics such that young teachers will be equipped with the knowledge and ability to address the needs of different learners. The training will heighten the teacher’s awareness in the new role of IT-assisted learning packages in teaching, and aims to harness technology to support effective teaching and learning.

Education Studies

Education Studies gives students the chance to study teaching and learning from an interdisciplinary perspective. Students will study early childhood/school education from psychological, sociological, philosophical, pedagogical and other perspectives. Students will develop a range of skills necessary for professional practice, such as problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, communication, social interaction, ethical decision making and global perspectives. Education Studies helps students appreciate the importance of professional excellence, ethical responsibility and innovation to the role of a teacher. We aim for our graduates to become beginning teachers who are caring and competent, intellectually enthusiastic, socially committed, and globally aware.

Career Prospects/Professional Qualifications

Their in-depth academic and professional knowledge confer graduates of the programme with excellent career prospects. They will possess a Qualified Teacher Status in Hong Kong and are ready to become fully qualified teachers in local secondary schools. In addition to the professional teaching career, graduates will possess the academic knowledge and intellectual skills to embark on a wide variety of other relevant jobs in the government sector, non-government organizations, commercial organizations, publishing sector, etc.
