The Bachelor of Fine Arts, Major in Jewellery Design and Metal smiting program offers students opportunities to explore the media and practices of jewellery and hollowware. The ﬁelds of Jewellery Design and metal smiting are experiencing a renaissance of diverse creative approaches. You will explore a wide variety of concepts and philosophies as you engage in critical discussions about content and form in order to create a new language of metal. The program offers a broadly based metals education, including studies of art jeweler, hollowware, product design, and metal business practice. Design and technical projects emphasize problem solving, conceptual development, and analytical thinking. From basic skills development, you will go on to explore advanced technical procedures and to develop your individual artistic practice.

Program requirements:

The Major in Jewellery Design and Metal smiting program is an open entry program. After successfully completing the first two years of study, students may declare their intention to Major in Jewellery Design and Metal smiting.

Facilities and Technology:

The Jewellery Design and Metal smiting program has three interconnected jewellery studios with 37 large benches equipped with flexible shafts and torches. Adjacent design tables are available for upper-level students. You will also have access to a casting area, finishing equipment, computer design stations with modelling programs, a silver smiting studio, and much more.

What do Graduates do?

Graduates of NSCAD’s Jewellery Design and Metal smiting establish successful art jewellery studio practices, while others develop commercial jewellery businesses. Many have pursued graduate studies and have become writers, critics, curators, and professors at colleges/universities.

An International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with a minimum grade of 24 is acceptable for entry to NSCAD. Higher Level courses with a grade of five or higher are eligible for transfer credit. English Language Requirements: TOEFL score of at least 90 with no test less than 20; IELTS score of at least 6.5 with no band less than 6.0; CAEL score of at least 69 with no band less than 60; CanTest score of at least 4.5 with no part less than 4.0; CAE score of at least B; MELAB score of at least 82 with no band less than 80; IB score of at least 5 in English A1 or A2 HL; AP score of at least 4 in English Language and Composition or Literature and Composition.
