The Bachelor of Early Childhood Teaching prepares students as specialists in the teaching of children from birth to 12 years. Graduates will be qualified to teach in primary schools and in early childhood settings, and will be eligible to apply for Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration.

Our students learn through a combination of on-campus theory and well supported practicum experiences. Students attend practicum within every semester of the course and across a range of early childhood education areas including pre-schools/kindergartens and primary schools.

Lecturers teaching in the Bachelor of Early Childhood Teaching have significant and extensive experience across a range of early childhood and primary settings, and extensive higher education teaching expertise.

Course structure

All new students commencing in a higher education course must attend their faculty course orientation and Holmesglen's higher education orientation.

Work placements
The eight practicum subjects, one each semester, are work-based placements. These placements are in early childhood services, kindergarten and primary schools.

This course consists of 40 core subjects, comprising 32 theory subjects and 8 practicum subjects (practical placements) that provide 141 days of supervised placement in early childhood education and care settings, and primary schools.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used, including practical strategy assessments, case studies, essays, exams, individual and group presentations, reports, role play simulations and hurdle task requirements.

  • Teaching in Early Childhood Programs and Primary School Settings (Foundation to Year 6).

Pathways to further study:

  • Masters and other post-graduate qualifications.
