This nationally accredited course provides the opportunity for those with a passion in a particular subject specialisation and the desire to work with young people, to become secondary teachers.

Students study their preferred areas of specialisation, in addition to a suite of core education units that address key educational needs of young people. Graduates of this course will have the flexibility to take up employment in both private and government secondary schools. A central feature of this course is the range of professional practice experiences Pre-Service Teachers undertake throughout their training. This provides valuable and diverse employability skills and enables them to connect theory to practice.

Drama Education Major

A dynamic and practically-based major that prepares students for a highly rewarding career teaching drama in secondary schools.

The major combines practice in acting, devising and directing with studies in educational theory and teaching practice. Students receive specialised instruction in performance and teaching from experts who are also theatre practitioners and researchers in their own right. This major is distinctive in its approach to drama/theatre practice and teaching. It emphasises the importance of content/practical knowledge in theatre and offers innovative approaches to directing and acting.

Learning Outcomes

• Adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts to create positive learning environments in Drama.
• Communicate knowledge and ideas clearly in both written and oral formats.
• Critically reflect using accredited standards, mentor feedback and the ECA Code of Ethics to demonstrate responsibility and accountability and plan for continued collaborative and autonomous professional learning and development.
• Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of Drama and the Australian curriculum and teaching strategies for Drama teaching in secondary education.
• Demonstrate leadership, exercise professional judgement and collaborate to plan, problem solve and make decisions in Drama.
• Exercise critical thinking and judgement to plan and implement Drama programs for a range of students with diverse abilities and needs, and assess the outcomes.
• Review, analyse and synthesise knowledge of teaching strategies to plan for the content of Drama teaching.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates will be eligible to seek employment in both government and non-government secondary schools teaching Drama.
