Whether you’re planning an aviation career as a manager or as a commercial pilot, a foundation in the business management principles of the industry is key to success in this challenging and rapidly changing sector.

It’s well recognised that, in the near future, the aviation industry will require increased numbers of new pilots and other trained specialist staff to operate the expanding global air fleet.

The first three years of the course provide a general introduction to business analysis, the aviation sector, technical aspects of piloting and industry relevant work experience. In the fourth year, the course divides into two streams. Some students will opt to enter flight training to qualify as a commercial pilot; others will choose to enter the IAA's air traffic controller (ATCO) training programme. The remainder will remain in DCU to follow additional management and aviation modules.

About the course

The first two years of the Aviation Management course provide a general introduction to business analysis, the aviation sector and technical aspects of piloting. DCU is recognised as a Registered Training Facility (RTF) by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) for the theoretical knowledge needed to acquire the Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL). The Flying element of the PPL is the Responsibility of the student.

The third year of the course begins with a four- to six-month INTRA work placement in a related aviation setting.

The second half of third year is comprised of both specialist business and aviation modules.

In the fourth year, the course divides into three streams. You may choose to stay in DCU and study additional modules in management and aviation. Or you may apply to the Irish Aviation Authority's training programme for Air Traffic Controllers (ATCO). Or you may opt to pursue integrated flight training at an approved Flight Training Organisation with a view to qualifying as a commercial pilot (Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL)).
