北美标准化考试词汇必备(二)

北美的标准化考试种类繁多，有我们大家熟悉的TOEFL、SAT、ACT、GRE、GMAT等，还有一些考试是我们不太熟悉的，例如LAST、MCAT、AP等。

不过对于任何一个考试来说，都要求我们的学生具备较大的词汇量。一个受过良好教育的美国人的词汇量大概是2万左右，而现在我们的大学毕业生的词汇量普遍在6000-8000，英语系毕业生的词汇量可以达到1万-1万2。这就是很多同学在出国前都要疯狂背单词的原因。

为了更好地帮助大家进行英语词汇的学习，尤其是应对北美的各种语言和学术类考试，并了解英语词根词缀的知识，留学监理网的老师特意为大家制作了一个系列的词汇提升类文章，希望大家可以有效地进行词汇学习。今天我们就来学习一下How to Talk about Doctors。

内科医生/internist

To find out what ails you and why, this specialist gives you a thorough physial examination, using an impresive array of tests: X-ray, blood chemistry, urinalysis, cardiogram, and so on. 

妇科医生/gynecologist

This speicialist treats the female reproductive and sexual organs. 

产科医生/obstetrician

This specialist delivers babies and takes care of the mother during and immediately after the period of her pregnancy. 

儿科医生/pediatrician

This speicialist limits his practice to youngsters, taking care of babies directly after birth, supervising their diet and watching over their growth and development, giving them the series of inoculations that has done so much to decrease infant mortality, and soothing their anxious parents. 

皮肤科医生/dermatologist

Our outer covering, like so many of our internal organs, is subject to diseases and infections of various kinds, running the gamut from simple acne and eczemas through impetigo, psoriasis, and cancer. There is a specialist who treats all such skin diseases. 

眼科医生/ophthalmologist

The physician whose specialty is disorders of vision may prescribe glasses, administer drugs or perform surgery. 

骨科医生/orthopedist

This specialist deals with the skeletal structure of the body, treating bone fractures, slipped discs, clufoot, curvature of the spine, dislocations of the hit, etc and may correct a condition either by surgery or by the use of braces or other appliances. 

心血管医生/cardiologist

This specialist treats diseases of the heart and circulatory system. 

神经科医生/neurologist

This physician specializes in the treatment of disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the nervous system. 

精神科医生/psychiatrist

This specialist attempts to alleviate mental and emotional disturbances by menas of various techniques, occasionally drugs or electroshock, more often private or group psychotherapy. 

词根详解--internus：

我们刚刚学习过的单词internist和internal都拥有共同的拉丁语词根--internus，意为inside。The internist is a specialist in internal medicine, in the exploration of your insides. This physician determines the state of your internal organs in order to discover what’s happening within your body to cause the troubles you’re complaining of. 

词根详解--gyne：

看过我们之前文章的同学一定认出了上面的希腊语词根，gyne意为女人、女性。同时，logos也是一个词根，意为科学，所以gynecologist是妇科医生的意思。而obstetrician同样来自拉丁语词汇obstetrix，意为midwife--助产士。所以obsetrician是产科医生的意思。

词根详解--paidos & iatreia：

希腊语词根paidos意为孩子，iatreia意为医学修复，所以pediatrician的意思是儿科医生。同样，儿科是pediatrics。

这里大家看到了另一个我们很熟悉的词根--ped。这是一个来源于拉丁语的词根，ped=foot，它组成的词汇包括：pedal-踏板、pedestal-基座、pedestrian-徒步的/步行者等。

词根详解--derma

这是一个希腊语词根，意为skin。这个词根组成的词包括：hypodermic-皮下注射、epidermis-上皮/表皮、pachyderm-厚脸皮的人/厚皮动物等。

词根详解--ophthalmos

眼科医生ophthalmologist同样是由两个希腊语词根ophthalmos和logos组成。第一个词根是眼睛的意思，第二个词根是科学的意思。英语中曾经用oculist来称呼眼科医生。这个单词有拉丁语词根oculus，意为眼睛。这个词根还构成了其他词汇，例如：ocular-眼睛的/视觉的、monocle-单片眼镜、binoculars-双筒望远镜以及inoculate-接种。

眼科诊室里还有这样一位医生--optometrist，意为验光师。这个单词中同样包含了两个希腊语词汇：optikos-vision, metron-measurement。

词根详解--kardia：

这个希腊语词根出现在了cardiologist这个单词里。我们再看几个具有相同词根的单词：cardiac-心脏的/强心剂、cardiogram-心电图，以及cardiograph-心电图机。

词根详解--neuron：

希腊语词根neuron意为神经，在英语中它的意思是神经细胞。同样的，neurology意为神经病学。Neuralgia意为神经痛。

今天，我们一起学习了很多用来表达不同科室医生的“高大上”的专业术语，如果你可以把这些词汇用在TOEFL、GRE、SAT的写作中的话，是不是一下子就能帮你抓住考官的眼球呢？

另外，我们今天还学习了很多拉丁语和希腊语的词根，学会这种重要的单词学习方法之后，你就可以和其他母语为英语的学生具有“说文解字”的能力了！
