U of T Music has been a national leader since 1946 in the training of music educators for the school, community and university programmes throughout Canada and beyond. And UofT Music has been a key resource for the development of research about educational practice and professional training.

Music: Composition (Specialist)

In addition to studio and small class instruction, the composition program features courses in areas such as counterpoint, orchestration, specialized instrumental techniques, electronic and computer music, composing for film (including silent film) and other media, song writing—besides courses examining various compositional techniques and musical styles.

Music: Comprehensive - Classical or Jazz (Specialist)

This option will provide students depth in musical training while preserving considerable opportunities to pursue breadth through electives in Music and in other Faculties. It features a solid, multidisciplinary core of required courses and it also offers students the freedom to design part of their program of study (for example, Ethnomusicology, Conducting) around individual interests that may not otherwise be accommodated through our specialized degree programs. The flexibility in the program makes it well suited to students wanting to develop a specialization in an area in the Faculty of Arts & Science. In Comprehensive - Jazz, students take applied lessons, theory, ear training, and history from in Jazz.

Music Education (Jazz) Program

The goal of the Music Education Division is to educate students to be critically aware, community oriented and reflective persons who are professionally prepared to be transformative leaders in the education of a musical society. To accomplish this:

• We seek to be teachers who exemplify this goal;
• We select students who identify with this goal and have potential to achieve it;
• We develop safe, caring, and nurturing relationships with our students;
• We create and encourage educative experiences that contribute to and require evidence of this goal;
• We lead students to actively engage contemporary issues and trends in music education locally, nationally, and internationally.
