Studying languages alongside archaeology gives you a unique insight into the historical and cultural development of different countries and societies from our earliest beginnings through to the modern day. You’ll study either one or two modern foreign languages (choosing from French, German, Russian, Spanish, Dutch, Czech, Italian, Catalan, Luxembourgish or Portugese) and will combine the practicalities of learning those languages with modules that examine their history, literature and culture.* In your Archaeology modules, you will explore the richness, difference and diversity of humanity, deepening your understanding the past through the study of the material record and world archaeology. You will also take part in practical archaeological fieldwork, with opportunities both in the UK and overseas. You will be learning from academics who are experts in their field, in departments that are innovators in terms of their research and public engagement. This civic ethos extends to the work our students do too: help communities make sense of their origins by collaborating with academic staff on research projects, labwork and excavations, or work in local schools to encourage language learning. In your third year, you will spend time studying or working overseas, immersing yourself in the culture of one of two countries and honing your language skills by living alongside native speakers. This degree will equip you for a variety of careers within an increasingly interconnected, multilingual and multicultural world. Our graduates are articulate, creative communicators; they are also adaptable, curious and culturally aware. We have alumni working all over the world in a diverse range of fields, including international development, archaeology, teaching, museums, journalism, charities, publishing, international sales, national and local governments, and translating and interpreting.*If you choose to study just one language, you will choose from French, German, Spanish or Russian. Italian is available as a second language option only, and we do not offer a year abroad in Italy. Luxembourgish is available to study from second year.
