专业概况
The bachelor of science in materials science and engineering is broad-based, encompassing a wide range of materials, and enables students to understand the scientific principles that govern the relationships among processing, structure, properties, and materials performance. Students also learn how to integrate these principles in the systematic design of new materials.
This undergraduate degree is accredited by the Engineering Commission of ABET, and it is intended for students who are interested in becoming practicing engineers or continuing on with graduate study.
Areas of Concentration
Our curriculum provides students with the core materials science and engineering fundamentals, while offering the option to select one of these seven areas of concentration:
Biomaterials
Design and manufacturing
Electronic materials
Energy materials
Metals and ceramics
Nanomaterials
Polymeric materials
Surface science
Career Paths
Graduates are well prepared to practice as materials scientists and engineers, excel in graduate study, work to advance the field, or apply their knowledge in other areas, including include law, medicine, or business.
The MSE department incorporated the a-k concepts into a materials-specific set of student outcomes well before last ABET review. The 1-16 outcomes provide the basis for a departmental senior exit survey that has been used since before 2006; the continuity of the format allows comparison of student self-assessed performance, which in turn provides useful feedback for the program. The MSE-specific student outcomes are listed below, along with the relationships between these outcomes to the requirements of ABET Criteria 3a-k.
Knowledge of sound fundamentals of dynamic multilevel microstructure: supports Criterion 3a.
The ability to apply mathematics and science to engineering problems: supports Criterion 3a.
The ability to perform mechanistic modeling: supports Criterion 3a.
Knowledge of computational materials science: supports Criterion 3k.
Knowledge of instrumentation for the characterization of structure and properties: supports Criterion 3k.
Knowledge of processing practice: supports Criterion 3k.
The ability to identify and formulate complex problems: supports Criterion 3e.
An understanding of how user needs define materials performance requirements: supports Criterion 3c.
An understanding of the global/societal context of engineering problems: supports Criterion 3h, and is enhanced by the Social Science/Humanities requirement.
Knowledge of professional ethics issues: supports Criterion 3f.
Knowledge of the dynamic nature of all structure, including materials and the systems and environments they serve, requiring knowledge of contemporary issues and the need for lifelong learning: supports Criteria 3i,j.
The ability to perform theoretical, conceptual and computational design: supports Criterion 3b.
The ability to design and interpret experiments; at the advanced level includes experimental optimization using statistical techniques: supports Criterion 3b.
The ability to apply the theoretical and experimental design techniques to both materials and processes: supports Criterion 3c.
The ability to function effectively in cross-functional teamwork, both within the materials discipline and from a multidisciplinary perspective: supports Criterion 3d.
The ability to communicate effectively in written, spoken and graphical form: supports Criterion 3g.
