The Civil and Biomedical Engineering program is a five-year program where students are required to complete core Civil Engineering courses in addition to project and design-based courses from the iBioMed program.

The diverse expertise within the Department of Civil Engineering enables us to address several grand challenges related to biomedical engineering with the goal of building healthier communities. These included studying the fate and transport of pathogens in ground water systems and their subsequent impact on the environment and human health. In addition, we study flow of contaminated water (e.g. with radionuclide or heavy metals) in fractured rock systems. The department also has an ongoing program on the systemic risk of hydraulic braking on ground water aquifers. Our faculty considers medical evacuation plans and medical resource allocation and optimization under national- or regional-levels disasters (e.g. nuclear release, wild fire, etc.) in order to ensure the health and resilience of our communities. With a strong foundation in mechanics, we equip our graduates with the necessary tools to model human body motion dynamics and responses to extreme loading conditions (e.g. explosions) as well as simulating human injuries (e.g. bone fracture, traumatic brain injuries, etc.) using numerical tools (e.g. finite element analysis). Realizing the importance of our healthcare infrastructure, we educate students on state-of-the-art methods to ensure the resilience of such critical infrastructure systems in order to avoid cascading failure under natural or man-induced hazards.

Co-op and Experiential Learning

The Engineering Co-op Program provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable experiences while working in engineering positions before you graduate. The Co-op Program is administered by the engineering Co-op and Career Services Department (ECCS).

Applicants must have Senior High School Graduation Examination (Huikao) and Chinese National University Entrance Examinations (Gaokao). Other English Language Requirements: CAE: (Cambridge English: Advanced): Minimum overall score on the Cambridge English Scale of 176, with no less than 154 in each of the components; PTE (Pearson Test of English Academic): 60 Overall with minimum score of 60 in Writing and Speaking. Valid for 2 years; CAEL(Canadian Academic English Language): 70 Overall Valid for 2 years; MELAB(Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): 85 Overall, Valid for 2 years, Minimum 80 in each of the three required components, Minimum 3 in optional speaking component (Required).
